Working with Charts and Indicators in MT5
Learn how to use charts, apply drawing tools, and customize indicators in MetaTrader 5.
Charts are one of the most important features in MetaTrader 5 (MT5). They allow you to analyze market movements, apply tools for technical analysis, and visualize trading opportunities.
1. Opening Charts
You can open charts for any instrument available in your watchlist:
In the Market Watch window, right-click on the instrument you want to analyze.
Select Chart Window.
A new chart will appear for that instrument.
Charts can be opened in multiple timeframes, from one minute (M1) to one month (MN).
2. Chart Types and Customization
MT5 supports three chart types:
Bar Charts – traditional price bars showing open, high, low, and close.
Candlestick Charts – popular format for technical analysis, showing the same data with visual body and wick.
Line Charts – a simple line connecting closing prices.
To change chart type:
In the chart window, click the chart type icons on the toolbar.
Or right-click the chart, select Properties, and adjust visual settings.
You can also change colors, gridlines, and background themes in Chart Properties to suit your preferences.
3. Using Drawing Tools
Drawing tools help you apply technical analysis directly on the chart.
Common tools include:
Trendlines – mark support and resistance levels.
Fibonacci Retracements – identify potential reversal levels.
Shapes and Channels – highlight patterns and ranges.
To apply:
Select a tool from the MT5 toolbar.
Click and drag on the chart where you want it applied.
To edit or move a drawing, click the object and drag or adjust its handles.
4. Adding and Modifying Indicators
Indicators are essential for advanced analysis. MT5 comes with a wide library of built-in indicators such as Moving Averages, RSI, MACD, and Bollinger Bands.
To add an indicator:
Open the Navigator → Indicators panel.
Drag and drop the indicator onto a chart.
A settings window will open where you can adjust parameters.
To modify or remove:
Right-click the indicator on the chart.
Select Properties to change settings, or Delete Indicator to remove it.
5. Saving Chart Templates and Profiles
If you use a preferred set of indicators and chart settings, you can save them for future use:
Templates: Save indicator setups, colors, and styles. Apply them instantly to any chart.
Profiles: Save an entire group of charts (with instruments and layouts) for quick switching.
To save a template:
Right-click the chart.
Select Template → Save Template.
To load:
Right-click the chart.
Select Template → Load Template.
